Japan wasn’t part of our planned route. But exceptionally cheap last minute flights made the chance to be in Japan for spring too good to refuse. Aside from the low airfares, the trip was only really made possible by the amazing hospitality of Japanese friends and their families who generously welcomed us into our homes.

More than just giving us somewhere to sleep (which was always extremely comfortable!) we were thoroughly spoilt with kindness, care and very good food. From delicious breakfasts of fresh croissants with the Katsuoka’s in Tokyo, to a spectacular dinner of tempura and tenmaki sushi with the Kato’s in Takeyama, to cracking open an enormous bottle of sake with Taka and her parents in Osaka — our times staying in the houses of friends proved to be one of the sweetest parts of our Japanese journey. So to our Japanese hosts we say – ARIGATOU GOZAIMASHITA!
